UofL receives largest clinical research grant in school history, to launch new center

The University of Louisville has announced it will launch a new clinical research center, thanks in part to receiving the largest clinical research investment in the institution’s history from the National Institutes of Health.

The NIH’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences is providing $11.7 million, which will be matched by UofL, to launch the Louisville Clinical and Translational Research Center. The approximately $24 million project will benefit the school’s clinical research infrastructure and support research for conditions like cancer, cardiac disease and strokes.

UofL President Kim Schatzel says the funding aligns with the university’s commitment to improving life for Kentuckians.

“This grant represents significant progress toward that commitment, engaging researchers and community members in developing new treatments and training the next generation of experts who will improve lives for years to come,” she said.

The Louisville Clinical and Translational Research Center, funded through the NIH IDeA Clinical & Translational Research Development Award program, will allow the university to launch research grants from $75,000 to $125,000 for projects to support early-career and advanced researchers.

The new research center will double the university’s staff for clinical trials, enhance research relationships with health systems and bring two new programs for research opportunities.

Deputy Director for the Louisville Clinical and Translational Research Center and Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Jiapeng Huang said the funding is going to be transformative for the university.

“LCTRC will develop top notch clinical and translational researchers who cannot only secure more NIH funding, but also develop new therapies and technologies which will benefit our patients and communities in Kentucky,” Huang said. “They will shape the future of Kentucky in a very meaningful way. “
