Social media video shows passengers evacuating a Delta Air Lines jet by the emergency slides at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Friday morning.
According to Delta, the evacuation was due to an onboard indication of an engine issue prior to takeoff.
“Delta’s flight crew followed established procedures to suspend the takeoff of flight 2668 from Atlanta (ATL) to Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) after an indication of an engine issue,” a Delta spokesperson told USA TODAY in a statement. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our people and customers, and we apologize to our customers for their experience. We are working to support our customers and get them to their destinations as safely and quickly as possible.”
Delta said there were 201 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants aboard the Boeing 757, and everyone was taken back to the terminal by airport ground transportation after the evacuation.
Atlanta Airport said in a statement on social media that four passengers reported minor injuries as a result of the evacuation.
The airline was not immediately able to say why the evacuation required using emergency slides rather than air stairs.
Flight 2668’s evacuation took place amid an already rough day for travel in Atlanta. A major winter storm is blanketing the southeast with snow, and ATL is among the hardest-hit airports. Hundreds of flights through Atlanta were canceled as of late Friday morning.
