Each week readers vote on central Indiana students who were nominated by their schools for their excellence in the classroom and beyond.
Readers can vote for their favorite student throughout the week at the bottom of this story on IndyStar.com, with polling closing at noon on Thursday, Dec. 12. Winners will be announced Friday.
This contest aims to introduce readers not just to the student who winds up winning but to all of the highly accomplished nominees.

Isabelle Vieting is a senior at Cascade High School. Isabelle brings positivity and creativity to every class. Her dedication to her work, even when faced with challenges, is admirable, and her ability to infuse a bit of joy (with the Muppets, no less!) into our lessons makes the classroom a brighter place. Her smile has the power to uplift everyone around her.
Samuel Lloyd is a junior at Southport High School.
Samuel Lloyd is a junior at Southport High School. Southport High School proudly recognizes junior Samuel “Sam” Lloyd for his outstanding accomplishments and unwavering dedication to academics, athletics, faith, and community service. An Academic Honors recipient, Sam has excelled across a rigorous lineup of AP and Dual Credit courses, showcasing both academic excellence and commitment. On the basketball court, Sam is a three-year varsity athlete and a leader, bringing dedication and skill that strengthen his team both on and off the court. Additionally, he’s a valued member of the track team, displaying versatility and enthusiasm for Southport athletics. Sam’s compassion is also evident in his work with the Unified Football team, where he supports students with disabilities with patience, inclusivity, and genuine care, building strong connections among his peers. Beyond his studies and sports, Sam’s devotion to his faith is a guiding force in his life, shaping his commitment to kindness, integrity, and service. As a student assistant, he demonstrates maturity and respect, always the first to lend a helping hand and bring positivity to every task. Sam has devoted countless hours to volunteer work in both the SHS and Indianapolis communities, and his involvement in Key Club further reflects his dedication to making a difference. Sam Lloyd’s academic achievements, faith, kindness, and uplifting spirit make him a role model for his peers and the community. Southport High School proudly celebrates his exceptional contributions and inspiring leadership.
Samantha Resler is a senior at Martinsville High School.
Samantha Resler is a senior at Martinsville High School. “Sammy” has had lead roles in last year’s musical as Belle in “Beauty and the Beast” and as Christine Daea in this year’s “Phantom of the Opera.” She is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council, serves our School’s Habitat for Humanity Build, is a member of F.F.A., and Riley Dance Marathon. Samantha is known through School and Community for her sterling solo vocal rendition of the National Anthem at School and Community events.
Riley Giles is a senior at Herron High School.
Riley Giles is a senior at Herron High School. Riley is an extremely creative, hardworking and determined student. She is heavily involved in civic volunteering, music, and faith-based leadership activities. We can’t wait to see her pursue her future goal of becoming an Architect!
Brianna Vazquez-Castillo is a senior at Ben Davis High School.
Brianna Vazquez-Castillo is a senior at Ben Davis High School. Brianna has a profound work ethic and dedication to helping others. She serves as a student teacher assistant at Ben Davis, and she goes above and beyond to support not only her teacher but also her classmates. Every day, she arrives ready to take on tasks and proactively assists others, creating a positive and collaborative classroom environment. Her selflessness and willingness to help make her a true example to follow.

Almaz Kebede is a junior at Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School. Almaz is known for her vibrant energy and commitment to academic excellence. Her active participation in class discussions and her insightful questions show a depth of understanding and a genuine love for learning, making her an exceptional scholar at Tindley.
Vivian Abdalla is a senior at Guerin Catholic High School.
Vivian Abdalla is a senior at Guerin Catholic High School. Vivian Abdalla is a phenomenal young lady. Academically, she excels in the classroom while pursuing the International Baccalaureate Diploma. While Vivian’s academic and extracurricular achievements are impressive, I most admire Vivian for her character. When asked what was the best piece of advice she ever received, Vivian responded with one of her favorite quotes, “Do small things with great love.” I certainly see this with Vivian as I watch her interactions with her peers and staff. She treats everyone around her with love and kindness.
Roman Salcedo is a senior at Roncalli High School.
Roman Salcedo is a senior at Roncalli High School. Roncalli communications teacher AJ Ablog says, “Roman has been amazing in class. He is very curious about video production and shows a ton of initiative when it comes to editing video! He is a joy in class and a great contribution to Roncalli Media Network!” Mr. Ablog also cites a high degree of participation in learning activities and a willingness to be of service.
