Warning to Aussies after ‘really sad’ find on beach highlights overlooked threat

Those fortunate to own a boat and enjoy the open water this summer are being desperately urged to keep an eye out for marine wildlife after a “really sad” sight was found washed up on a popular beach this week.

A large male loggerhead turtle was found motionless on Sunshine Beach in Noosa, Queensland on Tuesday, and by all accounts it was healthy and in its prime. However, the injuries inflicted on its back made it clear to wildlife rescuers what had caused its death.

“This adult male appeared to be in full health, however sadly passed away from a boat strike, as noted by the propeller injuries,” wildlife rescuers from Coolum & North Shore Coast Care (CNSCC) wrote online.

Photos of the deceased turtle show the deep cuts that a boat’s propeller created, with the injuries so graphic the wildlife organisation warned viewers ahead of showing the distressing images.

Boat strikes are a major threat to sea turtles as the sharp propellers or blunt force of the boat is capable of causing devastating injuries or death, often without the boat owners ever realising.

There is a higher number of adult turtles spending time close to the shore at the moment as it is nesting season, and this increases the chance of boat collisions just as more Aussies are getting out on the water during the warmer weather. As a result, the already endangered species is even more vulnerable.

However, there are easy steps that can help protect sea turtles while not dampening the fun. Those on boats can simply slow down in the water and be vigilant of marine activity.

“Protect marine life by slowing down in turtle habitats and staying alert,” CNSCC said.
