Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno is speaking about the FBI investigation involving him today at 5 p.m. since, the first time since news broke of the investigation in September.
Marceno, who has served as sheriff to the county for more than five years, was accused in early September of money laundering by his election opponent, who said there was an FBI investigation into the elected official.
Marceno has not been charged with a crime. The FBI has previously declined to confirm or deny the existence of an investigation.
A federal grand jury subpoena sent to Lee County’s Buildings & Permitting Offices in November requested materials connected to Marceno’s home and office listed the FBI as the investigating party.
Marceno was re-elected to the position in November with 90% of the vote. He was sworn in in a private ceremony on Dec. 5, the office said on its Facebook page.
