Weather delays: Classes start 2 hours later at GISD on Wednesday

Due to cold temperatures later this week, Gadsden Independent School District will delay school start times on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

“Wind chill temperatures are expected to feel like eight degrees, and this adjustment ensures the safety of our students waiting at bus stops during these conditions,” a GISD news release stated.

Classes will begin with a two-hour delay, according to the District. Staff members will report to work at their regularly scheduled time.

The delay is currently only scheduled for Jan. 8.

A hazardous weather warning from the NWS warns that temperatures will reach across the region, including El Paso and portions of central and southwest New Mexico and Texas.

Prep for winter weather

In anticipation of bitter conditions, Las Crucens should prepare by protecting the four P’s:

  • People: Minimize time outdoors, prepare for power outages, and check on the elderly and other vulnerable people.

  • Pets: Keep your pets warm, dry, and indoors as much as possible. Limit outside time and keep them bundled up.

  • Pipes: Insulate pipes if possible, open sink cabinets to expose pipes to heated air, disconnect hoses and turn off water to sprinklers.

  • Plants: Know plants’ temperature thresholds and cover them if possible to help retain heat.
