“My kids were washing the dishes,” Yesina Betsy said. “They didn’t get a chance to rinse.”
Betsy has lived at the Sunset Hills Apartments for years, and has noticed problems with the plumbing in the past.
But Friday morning, she was shocked.
“I [was] talking to the maintenance man Bill and I’m like, ‘what’s going on?’ He’s like, ‘well, the water, we had to shut it off as an emergency,’” Betsy said.
Sunset Hills Apartment Manager Shellette Golden said she called someone to come out and fix it.
“The water main line has broken,” Golden said.
Springfield Service Director Chris Moore told News Center 7 Sunday morning that a water main line had broken on the apartment’s property in the courtyard.
April Shinn, another resident, said they were given water by management until the building’s water is turned back on.
“They gave me one gallon of water, and that didn’t even flush my toilet,” Shinn said. “With it being government-owned housing, you’d think that there would be a lot more things done in advance to avoid problems like this.”
Shinn said she wishes they were given an advance notice of the issue.
“I apologize to my residents. I know they are going through something,” Golden said.
Moore said the city has made multiple attempts to reach out to apartment management or maintenance to turn the water back on, but have been unable to reach anyone.
Golden said she is planning to follow up with the city’s utilities department Monday.
Moore said that the city has a 24/7 maintenance number that is staffed on weekends.
We will continue to follow this story.
