What to know about the seismic retrofit of Hayden Bridge at Marcola Road in Springfield

Construction got underway Monday for the seismic retrofit of the Hayden Bridge at the intersection with Marcola Road in northeast Springfield, according to Lane County.

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during construction, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily through March 31, with flagging when necessary.

Concrete barriers will be in place to isolate the construction area while work is in progress, the county said.

Construction is starting at the Marcola Road and Hayden Bridge Road intersection and will end at the intersection of Camp Creek Road and Old Mohawk Road, the county said.

Structural elements will be added to the bridge to improve its resilience to earthquakes, according to the project page on the Lane County website. The design is intended to survive and remain operational following a 9.0 Cascadia Subduction Zone event.

The Hayden Bridge carries Marcola Road traffic across the McKenzie River and is the primary access to the Mohawk River valley.

The project is funded by a FEMA Hazard Mitigation grant, which was awarded to Oregon State Bridge Construction in 2023.
