Federal workers will have a day off on Christmas Day
According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, federal offices will be closed, and federal workers will have a paid day off.
Christmas Eve is a federal holiday in 2024
One Christmas present came early for federal employees—President Joe Biden announced via executive order on Dec. 19 that federal agencies will be closed on Christmas Eve, reports USA TODAY.
Many workers will enjoy an extra day off, but some will still have to work. According to the order, parts of the government that must remain open for reasons of “national security, defense, or other public need,” will still operate on Christmas Eve.
Will mail be delivered on Christmas Day?
According to the U.S. Postal Service, post offices will be closed on Christmas Day, so you will not receive your regular mail or packages.
Will FedEx and UPS deliver on Christmas?
Other delivery services, such as FedEx and UPS, won’t be operating at normal capacity on Christmas Day. According to both carriers, only critical services will be available, but routine delivery and pickup won’t be.
UPS resumes normal service on Dec. 26, while FedEx LTL freight shipping services will be in service the day after Christmas.
Will banks be open on Christmas Day?

Giant Eagle will operate with limited hours on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day, according to the Erie Times-News.
That follows the chain’s recent trend for Christmas hours. It was closed on Christmas Day 2022, according to the Akron Beacon Journal, and again in 2023, per Cleveland.com.

While some stores may be open on Christmas, several retailers will remain closed for the day.
Aldi, Costco, Target, Trader Joe’s and Walmart will all be closed on Christmas.
Will Walgreens or CVS be open on Christmas Day?
Additionally, Country Living reported that many Walgreens and CVS locations were open on Christmas Day 2023 and could be open again, albeit with modified, limited hours. Check with your local location to be sure.

Columbus’ city website, Akron’s city website, Canton’s government website, and Cincinnati’s government web page all provide trash and recycling calendars showing Christmas Day as a holiday. Trash will not be picked up on Christmas Day.
