When to see 2025’s full moons, total lunar eclipse, and supermoons

New Yorkers will be able to see a total lunar eclipse and three consecutive supermoons over the course of the year’s 12 full moons in 2025.

Here’s what to know about 2025’s full moons, including how they got their names and when they can be seen in the night sky.

When is the moon full in 2025?

There’s a full moon in every calendar month of 2025 on these dates: Jan. 13, Feb. 12, March 14, April 13, May 12, June 11, July 10, Aug. 9, Sept. 7, Oct. 7, Nov. 5 and Dec. 4.

When will you be able to see the total lunar eclipse in 2025?

The total lunar eclipse, which is when the moon takes on an orangish or reddish color after slipping into the inner part of Earth’s shadow, or umbra, will take place on Friday, March 14, 2025, according to NASA.

For New Yorkers, it should start roughly around 11:57 p.m. Friday and last until 6:00 a.m. Saturday, according to timeanddate.com, which lists the maximum eclipse happening at 2:58 a.m.

When are 2025’s supermoons?

There will be three consecutive supermoons in 2025 — Oct. 7, Nov. 5 and Dec. 4.

The “super” in supermoon often has more to do with its proximity to Earth and less, some say, than how it looks in size. Supermoons can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year. Visually, that might not leave much of an impression, but the proximity of a supermoon has an effect on Earth, causing higher tides than normal.
