Tennesseans across the state are bracing for a winter storm that is just starting its journey across the Volunteer State on Friday morning.

Those who live in West Tennessee woke up to snowfall on Friday morning as the storm continued to make its way to Middle Tennessee where people were already seeing some light snowfall before 8 a.m. The latest weather predictions has most of the state receiving multiple inches of snow.

And while the snow is pretty, people do need to be mindful and careful during this winter storm.

The National Weather Service has Tennessee under a winter storm warning for Friday into early Saturday morning and urges people to delay any travel until the storm has passed and it is safe to travel on roads once again.

Many Tennesseans are taking heed and are already enjoying the snow day. Take a look at some of the images and videos being shared, where the storm is right now and everything else you need to know below.

People are already up and about reporting on the snow in their communities in Tennessee. Here’s a look at some from early Friday morning in Memphis. The western part of the state could see six to eight inches of snow.

Other Memphians shared the start of their snow day on social media Friday morning.

Snow in the South can cause a lot of chaos, but one user on X, formerly known as Twitter, sees a bit of magic amid it.

“Memphis snow: schools close, bread disappears from the supermarket, and everyone pauses to admire the rare magic. It’s chaotic, but hey, nothing beats freshly fallen snow,” read the post.

Nashville and Middle Tennessee began to see flakes start to fall on what would usually be the start time for the early morning commute. And famed Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore has boots on the ground to capture every moment of it.

But Cantore isn’t the only one keeping an eye on the sky as snow begins to fall in Music City. X users posted early Friday about how quickly the snow was falling in the Nashville area.

And just like the rest of Tennessee, people in Middle Tennessee are excited about a snow day.

“It’s snowing at my house in Nashville! You know what this means folks, the whole City shuts down. Enjoy your snow day folks,” read a post.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation workers have been out in communities across the Volunteer State prepping for the winter storm that is expected to dump multiple inches of snow from Memphis to Knoxville. The National Weather Service has already issued a winter storm warning for the whole state.

Both organizations are warning people to stay home if they don’t have to go out, especially in West Tennessee which could start seeing winter precipitation as early as Thursday night.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511. Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary,” read the forecast discussion from the National Weather Service.
