NORWELL — Police say reports of an active shooter that sent police swarming two different locations in Norwell on Wednesday were both “unfounded.”
Norwell police received reports of a potential active shooter at 120 Longwater Drive just before 1:45 p.m. Wednesday. A person inside the building reported a message had started playing over the building’s intercom system that there was an active shooting in the building.
The building was put in lockdown. Employees inside reported to police that there were no sounds of an active shooter in the building and that they did not see anyone in or outside of the building that they believed was an active shooter.
Officers who responded searched the building and the surrounding area and did not locate a shooter.

“At this time, it is suspected that an employee accidentally selected the code silver alert in the preprogrammed system that altered the building and Police Department of an active shooter,” the Norwell Police Department said in a statement.
Just after 2 p.m., police received a call reporting an active shooter in the area of 104 Longwater Drive. The caller, who was aware of the incident at 120 Longwater Drive, reported hearing “loud bangs” in the area The building was immediately locked down, and officers who responded search the area but did not find a shooter.

All of the schools in the area were notified and placed in lock down as a precaution. Both incidents are currently under investigation.
