Why you should be thinking about your Memorial Day weekend plans right now

You are probably not thinking about booking coveted campsites in Colorado this summer, what with the rush of Christmas shopping this time of year.

But you should if you wish to land a site at popular campgrounds for Memorial Day weekend.

Many public lands, including Colorado State Parks, Roosevelt National Forest and Rocky Mountain National Park, are accepting reservations for Memorial Day, May 26, 2025.

Here is when these Colorado public lands start accepting reservations for this summer:

  • Larimer County: Reservations for campgrounds, including Horsetooth Reservoir, Carter Lake and more, can be made 180 days in advance for camping March 1 through Oct. 31. That means reservations for Memorial Day can be made in late February. To book campsites, call the reservation call center at 800-397-7795 or head to the county’s website.

  • Rocky Mountain National Park: Reservations can be made six months out for campgrounds, Aspenglen, Glacier Basin and Timber Creek. These are all reservation only. The most popular campground, Moraine Park, remains closed due to construction, according to the park. The campground is expected to open this summer but due to the unpredictability of the opening date and what sites might be available, the park is not yet accepting reservations for 2025. For Moraine Park updates, head to the Rocky Mountain National Park website. To reserve campsites, visit www.recreation.gov, use the Recreation.gov mobile app or call 877-444-6777. Campground reservations cannot be made in person at the campground or at any of the park’s visitor centers.
