Will it snow in Indiana on Christmas? Here’s a look at the long-range forecast

It’s possible some Hoosiers could see a white Christmas in Indiana this year, but take that with a grain of salt. While it’s still too early in the month to know for sure, one long-range forecast by AccuWeather is predicting a chance of rain or snow around the Indianapolis area for Christmas Day.

Here’s what we know so far on whether Indy is getting a white Christmas in 2024.

Will it snow in Central Indiana this Christmas?

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are looking downright chilly, according to AccuWeather’s long-rage forecast for Indianapolis. Cloudy conditions Dec. 24 with overnight temperatures could hover in the upper 20s.

On Dec. 25, AccuWeather’s forecast for the Indianapolis area calls for a chance of afternoon rain or snow showers. Evening temperatures could dip to 30 degrees with a possibility of snow, sleet and freezing rain later into the evening.

That said, as of Tuesday, Dec. 10, it’s still too early for the National Weather Service in Indianapolis to issue a Christmas Day forecast. Despite a freezing start to December, meteorologists say Central Indiana is expected to have a mild winter overall.

Indianapolis this year experienced its third warmest fall on record, according to a recent report by NWS. Average temperatures hovered near 60 degrees, roughly four degrees above normal.

Has it snowed on Christmas in Indianapolis?

Yes, Indianapolis has seen its fair share of white Christmases. Climate records for the holidays maintained by NWS show the last significant event happened in 2005 when Indy received 2.6 inches of snow on Christmas Day.

According to weather records dating back to 1893, the whitest Christmas for Indianapolis happened in 1909 when 5.9 inches of snow blanketed the area.

What is the average temperature on Christmas Day in Indianapolis?

Average highs across the Indianapolis area on Christmas Day are in the mid-30s, according to the NWS, with a normal high of 38.

Average low temperatures range from the low-20s with a normal temperature of 22.
