Will Rhode Island get a snowstorm this weekend? And when will it get warmer?

PROVIDENCE – A potential weekend snowstorm that forecasters have been monitoring for days will miss Southern New England and the region will see just a few flakes of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

“There will be no significant storm on Saturday as low pressure will pass well south of the region with just a period of light snow showers expected,” the weather service says in its forecast discussion Thursday morning.

“Low-pressure system that was possibly threatening to bring heavy snow to (Southern New England) this weekend will pass well to our south as the northern stream energy will not amplify the upper level pattern enough to capture this system,” the weather service says. “The northern stream energy will still bring a quick dusting to 1 inch of snow, possibly localized 2 inches on Saturday.”

A fine layer of light snow covers a thin layer of ice on a local RI pond on Dec 26, 2024.

The storm will bring snow and ice to the south-central and southeastern United States – from Texas to Georgia and the Carolinas – creating dangerous driving conditions and causing flight delays, according to AccuWeather.

Locally, the region has one more day of “very gusty winds and frigid temperatures” before conditions slowly improve, according to the weather service. Northern Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts could see some snow showers or flurries today.

The high today should reach 29 degrees in Providence before warming into the 30s Friday and during the weekend.
