Will school be closed Monday? What we know so far for JCPS families

Jefferson County Public Schools were supposed to return from winter break Monday, but the weather had different plans.

After calling off school Monday through Friday due to inclement weather, JCPS officials will continue to monitor conditions and plan to issue a decision on whether students will return to classes by 5 a.m. Monday at the latest, spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said.

As city crews work to make progress on clearing roads in the aftermath of Winter Storm Blair, another 3-6 inches of snow is in store for Louisville, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.

The Louisville Metro Snow Team has been at work since Sunday and has worked 24 hours each day since. The Snow Team has some extra help Friday, since the city is working with an emergency contractor to supplement the team’s efforts with 12 additional road crews.

Starting Wednesday the city Snow Team diverged from focusing solely on Louisville’s 110 designated snow routes to help clear routes near JCPS bus stops, Mayor Craig Greenberg said. More than 40,000 JCPS students ride the bus to and from school.

JCPS has a snow team of its own, which has plowed and salted roads on school campuses during 12-hour shifts this week, Callahan said. These efforts are continuing over the weekend.

No JCPS buildings have suffered damage during the bouts of winter weather, with heat, electricity and plumbing all working soundly as of Friday, Callahan said.
