Winter’s first real storm could deliver the most measurable snow in a few years to the Mid-Atlantic from Delaware to Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore up to New York City.
The National Weather Service has issued watches — meaning conditions and forecasts suggest dangerous weather is possible — for much of the region. Warnings are issued when dangerous weather is imminent or happening.
Here’s what to expect through the weekend as the cold, gloomy skies open up and flakes start falling Monday.
Winter storm warning for Delaware and Philadelphia
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Philadelphia and parts of Delaware from late Sunday night through late Monday night. Snow is expected to begin overnight Sunday, grow stronger Monday morning, and taper off Monday into the evening.
Snowfall totals are expected to come in between 3 and 6 inches, with Northern Delaware and the Philly suburbs likely to get the most. The coastal areas of Delaware might see more rain or sleet than other areas, pulling the snowfall totals down.
The snow should begin in the early hours on Monday and grow heavier as noon approaches.
Winter storm warning for Jersey Shore
South Jersey, including the Jersey Shore, is under a Winter Storm Watch from late Sunday night through Monday night and snowfall totals could end up between 5 and 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
Areas like Vineland and Mays Landing are more likely to see the higher end of the tally and the beach towns will be spared the brunt.
Snow should start falling by 4 a.m. Monday and be at its heaviest through early afternoon before tapering off by 4 p.m.
Winter storm warning for North Jersey, New York City
A Winter Weather Advisory could be issued for North Jersey and New York City as the storm approaches, but snowfalls are expected to top out around an inch in most areas, the National Weather Service has said.
Bergen and Passaic counties could see more snow than areas along the Hudson River, where less than an inch is currently expected.
Snow should be falling by 6 a.m. Monday.
