As south central Pennsylvania prepares for the first significant snowfall of 2025, Adams County has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning, according to an announcement by the National Weather Service.
The warning is in effect from midnight on Sunday night, Jan. 5, 2025, through midnight on Monday night, Jan. 6, 2025, the warning issued around 11 a.m. on Sunday said.
Heavy snow is expected in Adams County, with total accumulations of between four to seven inches, according to the weather service. A map released by the weather service on Sunday morning showed expected snowfalls in excess of six inches in southwestern Adams County, as well as along the Maryland line in the Hanover area.
The remainder of Adams County, and much of York County, showed expected snowfalls around five inches, according to the map.
The expected snowfall led local municipalities to declare snow emergencies, including New Oxford Borough and Oxford Township.
A snow emergency for New Oxford Borough and Oxford Township was set to begin at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, according to the releases. All vehicles were asked to be removed from snow emergency routes, the municipalities said, or face tickets and towing.
In a map released around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, estimates on snowfall by the National Weather Service are seen for central Pennsylvania.
Such conditions were expected to impact the Monday morning and evening commutes, the warning said.
Tier 2 winter weather restrictions were expected on local highways, with I-81 and I-83 both showing winter weather restrictions that will begin at midnight on Jan. 6, 2025, according to 511PA. Tier 2 restrictions prohibit unloaded trucks, trailers, RVs, and motorcycles, according to the website.
