With freezing temps expected this week, Jackson opens shelter, shares safety tips for residents

With cold, winter temperatures on the horizon this week, the City of Jackson announced the opening of a shelter, as well as shared a few tips for residents to stay warm and safe.

A winter storm has already impacted parts of Midwest and Atlantic, and is expected to affect Mississippi as well. Snow flurries were reported in Madison on Monday, and the weather forecast for the coming days calls for freezing temperatures and the possibility of more snow for most of the state.

“The National Weather Service forecasts temperature lows in the mid 20s throughout the week with the possibility of wintry precipitation Thursday night and Friday of this week,” according to a Monday press release from the city. “In consideration of these conditions, the City of Jackson is making preparations and providing helpful weather-related tips for residents in need.”

Temporary shelter opened

Shepard’s Gym opened at 2:30 p.m. Monday as a shelter for the homeless or those in need of a temporary shelter. Food and cots will be available. The gym is located at 1355 Hattiesburg St., near Jim Hill High School. An additional shelter may be opened if needed as well.

The city is partnering with Shower Power, a local nonprofit, who will be managing the temporary shelter.

“City leaders also caution residents to stay home if possible in the event of wintry precipitation. Unlike Northern cities, Jackson and much of Mississippi is not equipped to deal with widespread freezing precipitation,” the city’s press release states. “These conditions can lead to a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain, which makes traveling on Jackson roadways perilous. Residents are advised to monitor National Weather Service forecasts and local media reports.”

Jackson Fire Department will donate and install smoke detectors

The Jackson Fire Department is advising residents to exercise caution during the winter temperatures by monitoring the use of electric space heaters and cooking activity.

JFD will also donate and install smoke detectors for residents who do not have them. Please call JFD at 601-960-1399 if a smoke detector is needed in your home.

The city will continue to update residents with any new information or changes to current plans.

City shares more tips on winter weather preparation

  • Stay inside in heat during extreme cold.

  • If you do not have housing, seek shelter.

  • If you have to go outside, wear layers and carry a cell phone.

  • Check on neighbors, children, the elderly and chronically ill to ensure they are okay. Bring pets inside.

  • To prevent frozen pipes, open cabinets under the sinks in your kitchen and bathrooms to allow heated air to circulate around the water pipes. Let indoor faucets drip, but do not run a heavy stream of water.

    • Set your thermostat at a minimum of 55 degrees, especially when you are gone for the day or away for a long time. For energy conservation, 68 degrees is ideal.

Signs of hypothermia

  • If the person’s temperature is below 95 degrees, get them medical attention immediately.

  • Shivering or fumbling hands.

  • Exhaustion or drowsiness.

  • Confusion or memory loss.

  • Bright red, cold skin or very low energy in infants.

Signs of frostbite

  • Redness or pain in any skin area.

  • White or grayish-yellow skin.

  • Skin that feels unusually firm or waxy.
