Woman, 67, stabbed at Simi Valley care home

A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon after a 67-year-old woman was stabbed Friday in Simi Valley, police said.

Police Sgt. Rick Morton said the 24-year-old man allegedly went to a care home in the 4300 block of Ish Drive, knocked on the door and attacked the woman who answered. She sustained numerous wounds and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but was not fatally injured, Morton said Sunday.

Morton said officers don’t know whether the woman was an employee or a resident of the care home. He said there was no sexual assault and that it was allegedly just a random act of violence.

Police have not determined whether the two knew each other, but the man used to live in the vicinity of the care home, he said. The address is just west of Tapo Street on the eastern side of the city.

The suspect identified as Juan Avilez was booked into county jail where he remained Sunday in lieu of $540,000 bail, according to jail records.
