WSDOT and WSP warns travelers about wintry pass conditions

Wintery weather is already causing problems on I-90. Troopers shared a picture of a crash from near Snoqualmie Pass, saying snow is here and imploring drivers to be careful and drive for the conditions.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is also warning drivers that pass conditions could be difficult this weekend, sending a text alert warning people to delay travel if possible. They also said on social media, “Our cameras & signs are down due to a power outage & the forecast is calling for 12 inches (4 inches per hour). It’s going to be a challenging drive today. PLEASE slow down & have traction tires! WSP are enforcing chain requirements- $500 if not chaining up.”

Brooke Decubber told KIRO 7 she was driving from Moses Lake to Covington to see her in-laws and said she’d prepared for winter conditions.

“Things like making sure you have water, your coats, full tank of gas,” she said.

Lee Spurgin was also driving over the pass from Central Washington to Western Washington. He said the only concern so far had been standing water, but added most people had been going the speed limit and he hadn’t seen any issues on the roads.

“I just watch the pass reports and if it gets bad I don’t go,” Spurgin told KIRO 7.

According to Chief Meteorologist Morgan Palmer, a Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect for bands of snow showers through the central Cascades Friday, with mainly rain or a rain/snow mix in the evening with a better chance of it being all snow later Friday night. Palmer says the snow will come to an end by mid to late morning Saturday.
