You won’t get your mail Thursday. Post office closed Jan. 9 for National Day of Mourning

Tomorrow is no ordinary Thursday as America remembers its longest-living president James Earl Carter Jr.

There will be no regular mail delivery.  Wall Street is closed.  Federal workers get a day off.

In accordance with federal law, President Joe Biden  has declared Jan. 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning to honor the 39th president who devoted himself to a life of service after his one-term in office.

Carter died at age 100 on Dec. 29. His funeral will be held on Thursday at Washington National Cathedral.

What is closed on Jan. 9, 2025?

Biden has ordered  all executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government closed on Thursday, which will be a paid day off, according to The Hill.

The U.S. Postal Service says all post offices will be closed and regular mail will not be delivered, but there will be “limited package delivery service.”

The Doylestown Intelligencer subscribers and some Courier Times print subscribers who get their edition in the mail will get Thursday’s paper on Friday when mail service resumes.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will close U.S. markets. The Supreme Court, federal courts, and the Library of Congress will also be closed, the New York Times reports.

State offices, schools, banks and private businesses are not required to close for a National Day of Mourning. The National Park Service parks and visitor centers will “generally be open,” but administrative offices are closed

What other ways is Jimmy Carter’s legacy being honored

On Saturday Biden signed into law the renaming of the post office in the Carters’ hometown of Plains Georgia to the “Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Post Office.”

In Carter’s home state, the National Historical Park in Plains will have extended hours through Thursday, according to park officials.

All U.S. federal facilities are flying their flags at half-staff until Jan. 28.
